Uncovering the History of Southmoreland on the Plaza: a 110-Year-Old Mansion in Kansas City [Photos]

History of Southmoreland on the Plaza & The Buis Sisters

Southmoreland on the Plaza is a charming and historic property located next to the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, MO. Originally built in 1913 as a single-family home for Leo Snider and his wife, the property has a rich history, having been owned by several women over the years.

In 1948, the Buis Sisters, school teachers at E.B. White Elementary School, purchased the property and turned it into a duplex to make it more affordable to live in. They made significant changes to the property, including removing the central staircase, adding a staircase from the driveway to the second floor, and creating a kitchen in what is now the hallway to the Loose room.

Susan Moehl and Penni Johnson: The Founders of the Inn

In 1989, Susan Moehl and Penni Johnson, the founders of the inn, purchased the property from Agnes Buis, who had owned it since 1948. The property was in need of significant renovations, but thanks to the original blueprints, the innkeepers were able to replicate the original main staircase and uncover blocked staircases.

The August Meyer room, originally the kitchen, and the restroom in the Parlor, originally the butler's pantry, were also restored to their original layout. The inn was expanded, with over 11,000 square feet added to the main house and a new carriage house constructed.

Additionally, eleven bathrooms were added to the rooms, a back deck, pond, and barbeque were built in 1993, and the veranda was transformed from an open-air porch.

Aaron and Audrey Clemons: New Owners and Renovations

In 1998, Mark Reichle and Nancy Miller purchased the property and ran the bed and breakfast until 2019 when they sold it to Aaron and Audrey Clemons.

The Clemons completely renovated the property and transformed the previous owner's garage into the Charlie "Bird" Parker room, expanded the driveway, and partnered with the Kansas City Art Institute to decorate the walls.

A New Chapter: From B&B to Boutique Hotel

In 2022, Southmoreland on the Plaza pivoted its business plan and transitioned from a bed and breakfast to a boutique, self-service hotel. This change was in response to the evolving needs of its customers and the post-pandemic economy.

As a result, the inn now provides a more flexible and autonomous lodging experience for guests, while still offering the same comfortable and beautiful accommodations near the best shopping, entertainment, and dining in Kansas City.

Accolades & Recognition

Southmoreland on the Plaza has received numerous accolades over the years, including being named one of the Top Ten Small Businesses of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce and a member of the elite Select Registry. The inn has been featured in several publications, such as The New York Times, Gourmet Southern Living, Country Living, Better Homes & Gardens, Midwest Living, Travel and Leisure, and has been showcased twice on the Food Network.

With a rich history and a commitment to providing guests with exceptional lodging, Southmoreland on the Plaza is sure to continue to be a beloved destination for years to come.
